Coleman is a Lancashire native. She was a headgirl in the Arnold School, Blackpool and was awarded straight A's on her A levels. In a discussion about her appearance on Emmerdale Coleman confessed she was regretting that she did not go to University. Coleman participated in a club known as In Yer Space at her school. The group was in the stage production Crystal Clear in Edinburgh Festival. The show also received an enthusiastic reception. Coleman was awarded the award with an award for her exceptional performance. Whilst auditioning for drama schools Coleman landed the part as Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale in 2005. In 2009 she won nominated in the two categories including Best Actress-Sexiest Female as well as Best Performance Dramatic. Coleman received a TV Choice Award for Best Actress. Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on March 21, 2012 that Coleman was set to portray Matt Smith as the Doctor's Companion following the departure of Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and other characters have left the show. Moffat has decided to cast her in the role as she had the most chemistry Smith. She also spoke more quickly than he does.
